United Kingdom - Labtrac
The Most Avanced Microchip Identification System In the UK
New advanced micro-electronic technology has enabled AVID, of Southern California, to develop an exciting system, Labtrac, that provides precise, secure and permanent animal identification.
AVID utilises its own unique, patented technique, based on radio-wave communication to identify animals on demand. Traditionally, accurate laboratory animal identification has been difficult to achieve, due to traditionally inefficient methods of identification used in the majority of laboratories throughout the world.
Old techniques such as ear-punching, tagging, toe clipping and tail tattooing are time consuming and stressful, and important, expensive long-term research projects can often be delayed or invalidated due to animal misidentification or the problems resulting from infection.
To date, the only alternative microchip identification system available on the market has been costly and difficult to operate.
With over eleven years of extensive research and development, AVID is proud to announce that the new system, Labtrac, is now available, bringing new levels of precision and security to animal identification within your laboratory environment.
Unique Permanent Microchip Identification That Is So Easy To Use
Labtrac uses an implantable microelectronic device which is encapsulated within proven inert biocompatible glass. The tag is passive, with no power supply to replace or cause harm to animals. Each identity tag is manufactured and programmed under computer control to ensure against duplication of identification codes.
With over 70 trillion unique I.D. codes possible, no two animals would ever have the same number.
The size of the microchip is comparable to a grain of rice (2mm x 13mm). The standard injection procedure implants the identity tag quickly and safely, with minimal animal manipulation and subsequent stress.
The Benefits To Your Laboratory
The inexpensive Labtrac system, preferred to traditional identification procedures, provides unequalled precision and cost efficiency.
The AVID identity tag reader is a hand held identification reader for AVID and other radio frequency identification tags. It generates a low-energy radio signal which energizes the identity tag into transmitting its unique number. The number is displayed on a liquid crystal display (LCD) in an easy to read format. The reading time is less than 40 milliseconds.
The AVID identity tag reader combines portability, versatility and optimum performance in a rugged, lightweight functional design. In addition, it can also transmit via a standard RS232 interface to a computer, supporting custom application, enabling your laboratory to identify animals with the utmost efficiency.
Whilst saving time and money the microchip implantation through a needle under the animal's skin causes no more pain than an ordinary vaccination. Once the microchip is in place, the animal will not even be aware of its existence.
About 150 animals can be implanted in just under an hour. Hundreds of organisations and institutions throughout the world are currently using the AVID identification system.
These include:
The Labtrac system has shown no effect on animal health or study protocols. Sub-chronic evaluation in rats and mice has indicated:
"No significant effects on normal body weight, no palpable masses observed, no visible tissue reaction. Any tissue response to the implanted tag is considered to be completely non-adverse"How It WorksDr. Harris L. Stoddard III DVM

The received number is then displayed crisply on an LCD in an easy to read format. Reading time is less than 40 milli-seconds. |

![]() | A Low Cost System and Valuable Investment Th complete Labtrak system comprising of tags, tag reader and implanter is incredibly economical when you consider the long-term savings to be made over conventional identifications methods. It is a valuable investment for your laboratory, not only in the accuracy and success of your research, but in time, labour and space economy. Warranty and Service Due to the extensive research and development of the AVID equipment, a very low failure percentage has been reported in the last five years. The AVID tag reader is powered by two lithium C-cell batteries and is capable of over 25,000 read operations on a single set of batteries. In the event of equipment failure AVID Limited will replace the equipment free of charge within twelve months, subject to the equipment not being misused or abused. |
